Hyderabad: T R Vijaya Lakshmi, Asst. Prof., ECE Dept., Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology, awarded Ph.D degree from JNTUH in the month of May 2018.

She made a novel attempt to restore the historic knowledge inscribed in the palm leaf manuscripts using signal processing and pattern recognition techniques. Palm leaf manuscripts are recognised as the key to the knowledge in diverse fields that have been passed through generations. This includes tracts dealing with medicine, literature, astronomy, mathematics, vedas, astrology, etc. Restoration of palm leaf manuscripts is not a trivial task, as most of them decay due to dampness, insect activity, mold and fragility.

Historians face several problems to annotate text from such scripts. Thereby preserving and digitizing palm leaf manuscripts is highly essential. The problems associated with the storage and digitization of palm-leaf manuscripts is one of the motivation factors of her proposed study. In order to digitize such manuscripts she has proposed to exploit the inscription depth of characters, which is relatively robust to dust and fungus accumulation.

The depth information is acquired using a sophisticated 3D scanner. The main aim of her work is to recognize the similar Telugu characters (basic and compound) by projecting them in other planes considering the 3D feature (depth of incision). The efficacy of this 3D system is compared with that of a conventional 2D scanner. The advantages of the 3D system are distortion free, independent of palm leaf sample’s surface contaminants and good recognition rate.

The degree was awarded under the examination of K Sri Rama Murthy, Assoc.Professsor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIIT –Hyderabad. She carried out this work under the supervision of P Narahari Sastry, Professor, CBIT, Hyderabad and also T V Raajanikanth, Professor, SNIST, Hyderabad.
