David Ayer wrote and directed the 2016 movie, which featured Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto and grossed USD 745 million worldwide. Ayer will not be returning for the sequel, prompting studio bosses to offer the gig to a host of top directors, including Mel Gibson.
