India vs Australia: Aaron Finch beats Dean Jones to become 2nd fastest Australian to 5,000 ODI runs

Aaron Finch completed 5,000 One-Day International (ODI) runs for Australia on Friday during his side's clash with Team India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Finch, who reached the 5,000-mark in 126 innings, became the second fastest Australian to the milestone in the 50-over format. In the process, he beat Dean Jones, who took 128 innings to 5,000 ODI runs.

David Warner holds the record of fastest Australian to 5,000 ODI runs, who took only 115 innings. Warner is also third in the overall list of fastest batsmen to the landmark, behind leader Hashim Amla (101 innings), and the joint-second duo of Sir Viv Richards and Virat Kohli (114 innings).

Finch claimed the record during the opening ODI of the three-match series between India and Australia on Friday. The Australian captain, who needed 17 runs for the record, went on to register his 28th ODI half-century, while he also put up a 100-run opening stand with Warner after opting to bat.

The last time Australia played an ODI was back in September when they toured England. The hosts have made just one change from the XI that clinched the series in England, with Steve Smith returning in place of the injured Mitch Marsh.

Marcu Stoinis, who played at No. 3 in Smith's absence in England, will drop down the order at No. 4 ahead of Marnus Labuschagne, wicketkeeper Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell, who stays at No.7.

Meanwhile, India have made three changes from the XI that last played in February against New Zealand, with Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammad Shami coming for Prithvi Shaw, Manish Pandey, and Shardul Thakur.

On the eve of the Sydney ODI, Australian skipper Finch hailed Kohli, terming him the best One-Day player of all time. "If you look at his (Kohli) record it's second to none. It really is remarkable. I think what we have to keep in mind is that we have to keep looking to get him out," Finch was quoted by cricket.com.au, as saying.

"When you go away from that and you look to contain players you can miss a trick there. There are not too many chinks in his armour. He's probably the best one-day player of all time so it's about sticking to our plans and being really committed in that regard," Finch added about Kohli, who averages close to 60 in all ODIs and 50 in 50-over matches in Australia.

India and Australia are scheduled to play the second and third ODI in Sydney and Canberra respectively before turning the focus to the shortest format.
