Former Pakistan cricketer Misbah-ul-Haq has been appointed as the head coach and chief selector of Pakistan men's national cricket team on a three-year contract.

As per a press release by the Pakistan Cricket Board, the former skipper stood as the unanimous choice of a five-member panel that included IntikhabAlam (former captain and the longest-serving Pakistan team manager and coach), Bazid Khan (former international cricketer and one of the most respected commentators), Asad Ali Khan (member, Board of Governors), Wasim Khan (Chief Executive, PCB) and Zakir Khan (Director – International Cricket, PCB).

The PCB, following the recommendation of Misbah, also appointed former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis as the Bowling Coach of the national team on a three-year contract.

"It is very humbling for me to join a select group of some of the very best to have coached the Pakistan national sides in the past. It is an honour and more than that, a massive responsibility as we live and breathe cricket.I know expectations are high, but I am absolutely ready and up for the task otherwise, I would not have thrown my name in the hat for one of the most challenging and coveted roles in Pakistan cricket," Misbah was quoted as saying in the press release.

In their first assignment, the duo of Misbah and Waqar will be working with the Pakistan cricket team for their upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. Set to be flagged off on 27 September, the subcontinent sides will lock horns for three-match ODI and three-match T20I series. The team will then play its first series in World Test Championship against Australia in November/December this year.

It may be noted that Mickey Arthur's tenure as Pakistan's Head Coach ended after the team failed to make it to the final four of this year's World Cup. The contracts of Bowling Coach Azhar Mahmood and Batting Coach Grant Flower were also not renewed as the PCB looked to revamp the state of the cricketing set-up at the national level.
