WhatsApp gets voice and video calls on its desktop app, but not all can use it

Highlights

Soon WhatsApp users will be able to make voice video calls on WhatsApp Web from your desktop.

WhatsApp voice and video calls on mobile devices have been available for a while now, but the same is not available for the web and desktop option for the messaging app. While that is not really a problem, it is inconvenient for all people who use WhatsApp on the web to help them multitask instead of sticking with their phones.

But the good news is that that is about to change. WhatsApp has been working to bring voice and video calls to its web and desktop platforms, and it has been detected in beta. That means this feature will be released to the general public soon.

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has started testing beta voice and video calls with a group of users. As seen in the screenshots, users who are part of the beta test program have received new voice and video call buttons in the chat header on the desktop and the web. To make a call to any contact, you need to click any of the buttons.

When you make a call, you will see a separate pop-up window with the name and profile photo of the contact you are calling, a button to turn the video on or off, a mute button, a menu button, and a button to hang up.

Now if you are receiving a call, you will be able to see a separate popup that will appear when the user receives a call. The pop-up window will display the contact's name, profile picture, and buttons to accept or reject the call.

This feature is currently available in beta and is not available to all users, and WhatsApp has yet to mention when they plan to roll out this feature to the general public.
