If there was a concerted effort to ensure effective implementation of the Prevention of Child Marriage Act (PCMA) 2006, and the Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act (CRMA) 2002, both Warangal Urban and Rural districts can be turned into child marriages free zones, Urban and Rural District Welfare Officers (DWOs) R Varalaxmi and P Sridevi said.

Warangal: If there was a concerted effort to ensure effective implementation of the Prevention of Child Marriage Act (PCMA) 2006, and the Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act (CRMA) 2002, both Warangal Urban and Rural districts can be turned into child marriages free zones, Urban and Rural District Welfare Officers (DWOs) R Varalaxmi and P Sridevi said.

The DWOs, speaking at a programme - 'Interface between youth advocates with government line departments responsible for implementation of PCMA and CRMA' – jointly organised by the Girl Advocacy Alliance, and FMM Social Service Society here on Thursday, emphasised the need for creating legal literacy among the people. Sensitising people about the ill-effects of the social maladies arising out of PCMA and CRMA is also essential, they said.

"Poverty and illiteracy are two major factors that underlie child marriages. Early marriage is a strategy among the poor as the financial burden of raising the child is passed onto the husband side.

The change can be achieved by organising more awareness campaigns," the DWOs said.

Child Welfare Committee chairman Mandala Parashuramulu, members Vanam Balaraju and Konda Manjula said that those performing child marriages will be booked under Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. DCPOs (Rural and Urban) P Santhosh Kumar and G Mahender Reddy were among others who spoke.
