Vikarabad: The territorial electoral battle is in full swing. Candidates of major parties are filing papers for the first phase. The campaign is going to intensify further after the withdrawal of nominations. Leading parties are trying to win the newly formed Vikarabad zilla parishad. All parties are seriously immersed in estimations and chalking out strategies to gain in the polls.

There are a total of 18 ZPTCs in the district. The party which wins at least 10 ZPTC members will get the zilla parishad. Parties are on alert and taking utmost care so that their candidates should not get influenced by other parties. Vikarabad had only 17 mandals when it was a part of old Rangareddy district.

In this, TRS bagged nine ZPTCs while Congress got five and TDP got three. A new mandal Kotpalli was formed after Vikarabad became a separate district. Now the number of mandals have increased to 18. And elections for 18 ZPTCs will take place now. To get the ZP chairman seat, any party should win at least 10 ZPTCs. Major parties are trying to touch this magic figure.

Earlier, Congress won in four mandals out of six in Vikarabad revenue division. TRS won two places. Three of the four mandals in Tandur constituency were won by TRS and one by Congress. Five ZPTCs in Parigi mandal were swept by TRS and three ZPTCs in Kodangal mandal were won by TDP. After several political developments in the state, a majority of the ZPTCs in the district joined TRS.

The TRS leaders have expressed their confidence of winning all the 18 seats as they got positive results in panchayat elections. But, Congress party leaders believe that there is an anti-incumbency factor which may fetch them positive voting. TRS MLAs won from Vikarabad, Parigi, Kodangal and Congress won in Tandur.

As the elections are being conducted on party symbols, all the parties are trying to project their image along with local influence of the leaders. Though BJP and TDP are not in the stiff competition, they are also claiming that their traditional rural vote bank will yield some good results, thus they could become key players in the election of ZP Chairman.
