Hyderabad: The Kaloji Narayan Rao University for Health Sciences has commenced counselling for filling of first year MBBS seats in government and private medical colleges in the State. Certificates verification for convener quota seats is set to be completed on July 5 and in the meantime, it also called applicants to send online applications for filling management quota seats in private medical colleges.

It may be mentioned here that Centre, for the first time, brought in EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) quota which is being implemented for the first time from this year onwards. However, students eligible for EWS quota may have to wait as the State awaits clarity from the Centre on a total number of seats that will be filled under this new quota.

Until now there is clarity on EWS quota in government medical colleges as Centre notified an additional 190 seats for six government medical colleges in the State. Also, the State government issued orders that 10 per cent of seats in the six medical colleges would be allocated for EWS quota students which means 100-odd seats in government medical colleges would go to students from OCs, but with poor financial background.

However, the issue is that there is no clarity on how many EWS seats are on offer in private medical colleges in the State. After MCI instructions, the State has sent a list of 10 private medical colleges that have come forward to implement EWS quota from this year. Now, the Centre has to notify the additional seats given to each private medical college so as to implement the new reservation quota.

"It is not clear whether Centre would consider proposals of all private colleges that applied for the quota or would assess and take a final call. Only after it notifies the total number of additional seats, then the State has to issue an order to implement 10 seats in private colleges for EWS quota," said a senior official of the health department. Meanwhile, health university officials stated that web-options process would commence shortly after completion of the certificate verification process.

"If EWS seats in private medical colleges are notified this week, there are chances of seats under EWS quota to be filled in this counselling only. Otherwise, EWS seats in both government and private medical colleges would be filled in a separate counselling later. As of now only EWS seats in government medical colleges is clear," the official said.
