Support staff hard-pressed & over-burdened, made to wait inordinately for salaries. Result: Poor & untimely services; pathetic conditions of all sorts plague the hospital

Musheerabad: The allegations of Dr Vasanth Kumar, who tried to self-immolate alleging that he was being framed for rumours over positive coronavirus, that there are huge scams in allotment of outsourced staff in sanitary and security segments are nothing new. Gandhi Hospital has been besieged with a plethora of problems including lack of cleanliness, security, medicines and individual attention to patients.

The Hans India spoke to some stakeholders who strongly allege that all is not well at the hospital.

There have been allegations about the outsourced staff in sanitation and security wings, which is resulting in delay in disbursement of salaries. Union leaders say that security, sanitation and helpers get a salary of Rs 8,500 each, which is below par.

Krishnaamma, a sanitary worker and member of the sanitary and workers union, said, "After a lot of arguments we received two-month salary a few days back. The salary is not cleared until the workers pressure the contractor." "Now that we have been paid, we are not sure about our next month's salary," she added further.

Sai, the supervisor of Agile Group that bagged the security and sanitary workers contract, said, "Unless and until the workers put up severe pressure and threaten to go on strike, the government doesn't release budget.

When the facility was started, the government gave us the contract and allotted us workers for a 1,000 bedded facility. However, additional wards are opened later, but the human resources are not added." "There are around 391 workers 185 for sanitation, 103 for security and 103 for patient care, which is very inadequate for a 2,500 bedded hospital," he adds further.

No salaries for nurses, too

The contract nurses working at the Gandhi Hospital are also are not receiving salaries on time. Megha Mala, union leader for all working contract nurses, shared, "There are around 250 contract nurses who have been waiting for salaries for the last two months. The contractor passes the blame onto the government stating that there is a delay in the release of bills."

If salaries are not credited by Saturday, the nurses are planning to take the issue up with the Health Minister, she adds further.
