Hyderabad: Bharat Jodo human chain formed in city on the occasion of Martyr's Day

Hyderabad: Remembering Gandhiji on the occasion of Martyr's Day, more than 1,000 people participated in a massive human chain at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park on Thursday evening. The event was organised by Citizens against CAA-NRC-NPR under the banner of 'We the People of India – Hum Bharat ke Log,' a pan-Indian initiative of many progressive groups and citizens. A kilometer-long tricolor was held aloft by the participants of the human chain.

According to the organisers, hundreds of people from all walks of life observed the martyrdom day of Mahatma Gandhi. The people resolved that they shall stand united, and work against communal hatred, and strive towards building India along the dreams of the freedom movement and our Constitution, based on freedom, equality and justice for all people of all faiths, cultures and communities.

The evening was marked by asserting the diversity of India through multi-religious prayers and observance of silence at 5:17 pm, the exact time when Gandhiji was assassinated on January 30, 1948. Participants carried various placards with messages such as 'Daman Nahi, Aman Chahiye,' 'India is Our Home, We All Belong Here', 'When Injustice Becomes Law, Resistance Becomes Duty' and 'KCR be a Star, Say No to NPR.'

The Preamble of the Constitution was read out collectively. The protest reverberated with slogans and songs and ended with a collective singing of the national anthem.

The human chain was organised as part of the nationwide 'Bharat Mala' being held at hundreds of places across the nation and also as part of the all-India massive resistance against CAA-NRC-NPR. The organisers said that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a "discriminatory and unconstitutional legislation," is attempting to redefine citizenship based on religion, and the process of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) would make citizenship as a weapon against the most marginalized sections such as Dalits, adivasis, women, minorities, unorganized sector workers, slum-dwellers, migrants, transgender, queer people, landless labour etc.
