Hyderabad: Doctors and healthcare works wearing PPEs in Corona pandemic are being advised to re-use goggles, that confirm to BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) or European Standards, after proper disinfection. Goggles can be disinfected by users and re-used at least five times each, whereby one pair of goggles will suffice for 6 days for corona warriors.

It may be noted that goggles are crucial components of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits. After use of PPE kit, all its components are discarded, as bio-medical waste. At Gandhi hospital, everyday over 500 PPE kits are being dumped into bio-medical garbage box that is lifted every few hours by concerned staff. After Union Health Ministry's advisory regarding the same few AIIMS have already started practising this method.

Standard Operating Procedures to this effect were also given. Some of them are reprocessing and reuse of goggles must be done only when it is dedicated to each individual (username should be written over the band). Reprocessing must be done after every use before using it again. Everyone must adhere to manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and disinfection of goggles, wherever available.
