Hyderabad: A 37-year-old constable working at Kuslumpura police station in the city succumbed to coronavirus on Wednesday night at Gandhi Hospital.

Hyderabad: A 37-year-old constable working at Kuslumpura police station in the city succumbed to coronavirus on Wednesday night at Gandhi Hospital. This is the first coronavirus related death from the police department. The constable was declared dead around 10.30 pm.

The police said that the constable was infected by the virus and had been undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital. He is survived by a wife and three children and all of them have been tested negative for coronavirus.

The constable had served the lockdown duty at the check post near Puranapul junction for 15 days and was later shifted to regular duties. However, he underwent COVID-19 tests after falling sick and was tested positive. The constable is said to have contracted the virus while working at the check post near Jiyakuda market which reported the maximum number of positive cases.

After the constable tested positive, other policemen who worked with the patient at the check post have been sent to quarantine as a precautionary measure. The primary and secondary contacts of the deceased are now being traced.

The constable hails from Nalgonda district and joined the police department in 2007 and was working for Hyderabad commissionerate.
