  • • Bigwigs escape; they obtained stay in lockdown

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) teams under the supervision of Commissioner Lokesh Kumar and Zonal Commissioner Ashok Samrat sealed 150 small-time polluting industries, mostly plastic units here on Wednesday. However, the big fish escaped as they managed to get stay order during the lockdown. A few big plastic and scrap (iron mouling) industries obtained stay orders during lockdown. Small-time units were sealed.

It may be noted that earlier this year, the High Court had issued orders not to entertain stay orders. The GHMC unleashed a massive campaign against them on June 3.

According to officials a total number of 150 illegal units in Shastripuram (including Tata Nagar which is a part of the residential colony), was sealed on Wednesday after completion of notice period served before lockdown.

The case of illegal industries in Shastripuram Colony was heard on June 1 by the bench comprising Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and Justice A Abhishek Reddy through video conferencing with the advocate general said to have been informed the court that civic body failed to take action against the industries during lockdown as they were busy fight against Covid-19 issues.

The chief justice asked the AG to file a counter affidavit explaining the number of notices served to industries and action taken against them. Later the matter was posted to some other date.

Deputy Commissioner GHMC Rajendranagar Pradeep Kumar, Liaisoning Officer Anjaneulu, Sanitory Inspector Narsimhlu beside some other officials of neighbouring zones also took part in the campaign.

However, the local residents are unhappy as big industries are still running. "Though the small industries have been sealed by the authorities, the big ones continue to operate with full impunity," informed Syed Shoukat Ali a resident of the colony.

Shastripuram is a 32-year-old HUDA approved residential layout in survey No. 134/20. It was approved 1988 and spread over 284 acres. It is just a stone throwaway from historic Mir Alam Filter.
