Rajendranagar: The Department of Urban Forestry is making efforts to help restore the past glory of HMDA Park at Shivrampally.
Works to turn the deserted place into a tree park with walkway facility have picked up pace. A variety of plants are being added to the park greenery before taking up a walkway along the periphery.
The entire area earmarked to promote the park is about 1.8 hectares and the estimated project cost is around Rs 10 lakhs for a year, informed Srinath Reddy, Forest Manager, Department of Urban Forestry. "We are planting around 17 varieties of saplings such as Tabubia valandea, Tabubia Risea, Pogada, Spathodea, Bottle Brush, Bignonia, Mahogani, Ficus Blakiana, Fox Tail Palm, Plumeria, Bouganvillea, Tabrnum, Neerium, Inermie, Acalipha, Durantha, Iresian etcetera," he said.
Saplings of different flowers in different lanes are being planted to present a diverse and soothing ambiance for visitors. The whole park will take a complete shape in next two weeks and will be restored to its past glory.
Standing on a wayside of the National Highway No.44 on the city outskirts, this park wears a deserted look due to shifting of a nursery few years back after existing there for several years.
The park exists on a dry portion of a historic lake called Bum-Ruknud-Dowla which is also known as Naher-e-Hussaini, Bum-e-Musa or Bum-Ki-Bowli. A canal passes along the park downward to the historic Mir Alam lake.
The lake once known for its pristine water turned into a polluted pond due to sewerage inflows from the neighboring habitations. Also, a vast portion of the lake turned into a dry land as the inflow and outflow channels has subsequently closed down thanks to the official apathy of the GHMC.
Anticipating that the open and dry land of the lake standing on a prime location became vulnerable for encroachments, the HANS India took up the matter and reported about it on June 18 last year.
This has attracted a swift response from the then Principle Secretary Arvind Kumar who turned to his twitter account and directed the HMDA officials to visit and take stock of the issue.
Later, the Department of Urban Forestry proposed a revival of Tree Park with walkway facility at the site for which the works are now grounded and planting of saplings was initiated on Monday on the sidelines of Haritha Haram program which is being celebrated on a grand scale in the state to mark the occasion of CM KCR's birthday.
