  • Serilingampally worst affected, officials say there is no land available for construction of markets
  • Out of a target of 45 model markets, 34 have been constructed

Hyderabad: When it comes to Model Markets, launched with much fanfare by GHMC three years ago, uncertainty looms large over the project. On one hand, the authorities have spent huge sums for constructing Model Markets, on the other, construction of many have been stalled due to lack of space, and many are running in losses due to which some have shut and there are no buyers for others.

The construction of eight model markets by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been cancelled due to lack of space. Out of a target of 45 model markets only 34 have been constructed. Some are functioning but many are not maintained well.

"Construction is underway for three markets in Subash Nagar, Venkatreddy Nagar and Jagathgiri Gutta. We find it more difficult to establish markets in Serlingampally Zone as it is occupied by companies. Out of a target to construct 12 model markets in Serlingampally Zone, we could construct only six markets as we couldn't find enough place for market construction," said Yadagiri Rao, Additional Commissioner, GHMC.

An estimate of Rs 22.87 crore has been spent for the construction of model markets across the GHMC limits. Each model market has an estimated expenditure of Rs 50 lakh. Pathigada and Gandhi Nagar markets received additional Rs 15 lakh under budget sanctioned for development and repairs.

The model market, which was constructed in Pattigadda was inaugurated on a grand note and was successful, initially. But as the demand faded away, vendors left the market. A lone saloon ran for a brief period and that too shut shop due to lack of business. Today, the model market is being used by local area children as playing field.

No takers due to high rent

People are shying away from model markets due to high rent. The mandatory six-month advance is another issue. Moreover, the shops are allotted only for one year period and shopkeepers need to renew every year.

Traders says that, the model markets are not well connected to the commercial areas thus they cannot make good profits.

Target & status

• In LB Nagar Zone, 10 model markets were constructed against a target of 11. The remaining last one is under construction

• In Charminar Zone, 6 model markets constructed against a target of 7 and the remaining one is cancelled due to lack of space

• In Khairatabad Zone, the target of 3 model markets has been achieved

• In Serlingampally Zone, 6 model markets constructed against a target of 12. The construction of remaining 6 model markets is cancelled due to unavaibility of land

• In Kukatpally Zone, 6 model markets constructed against a target of 9. Two markets are under construction and one is cancelled

• Secunderabad Zone the target of 3 model markets achieved

Tenders to lease out model markets this month

GHMC to process the tendering and auctioning for the Model Market once again in February to lease out the shops for better price. For the past three years, GHMC has been trying to lease out the shops but there are no buyers.

"We have called for tenders once again. The facilities are good," said Yadagiri Rao, Additional Commissioner, GHMC.

Deputy Commissioner will have authority to conduct the auctioning and process the tendering.
