Hyderabad: The coronavirus has shown its impact on small and petty construction works along with big projects in the city. They have been affected because of the scarcity of workers. With the news regarding the lockdown will be imposed again, many workers started to leave for their native places.

Many families which had planned to add another floor to the existing structure or dismantle the old building and replace it with a new one are forced to either postpone the idea or drop the idea, as the available labour in the city is very less.

"There number of available workers is very less. We are managing the works with available labour only. It is taking 10 days to finish the work which can be completed with a week," says U Dhanunjaya Rao, a resident of SR Nagar.

In earlier days, these kinds of works were given to a mestri on contract basis but since lockdown, the works are being executed on daily basis.

"This is mainly because of lacking clarity in the government officials regarding implementation of lockdown and the number of days it will be imposed. As there is no choice, we are engaging workers on daily basis and making payments," explains D Suresh, a resident at Hasthinapuram.

"I have ordered for cement and sand loads for constructing of an additional floor on my house but due to the scarcity of workers and the unpredictable rains, things are getting worse," says T Rajendra, a resident of Narayanguda.

Rumours on another round of lockdown have resulted the construction workers heading back to their hometowns as the cost of living will be minimal.
