Hyderabad: Several videos have gone viral on social media of police allegedly lathi-charging denizens after 7 pm in different areas of Old City. Several check points were installed in city and after the 7 pm the policemen were in action and resorted to 'tough measures' against the commuters and lathi-charged some of them. Amongst the videos, one under circulation was from Alijahkotla, another from Mallepally and some other locations. In these videos policemen were seen beating people with lathis from behind.

Apart from this, police also manhandled scores of journalists. Criticising the police action, MBT spokesperson Amjeduallah Khan said that in most of the viral videos the police appeared to be thrashing people. It is observed that the policemen were in frustration and were taking it on people, without even asking them why they came out on streets. "Policemen should identify those who were violating the norms and act accordingly.

Random punitive steps won't help," he said. He said that instead of hitting with lathis without asking them the reason, the police must ask them then take a serious action against the violators.

According to the Government Order Number 45 issued on Sunday night, print and electronic media are marked as essential services during the lockdown for containment of the spread of COVID-19 in Telangana.
