Hyderabad: In a first of its kind, a made in India valve was used in a risky heart surgery on an Iraqi national in a city hospital. Adhab Abbas Kadhim, 68, a resident of Baghdad was suffering from severe heart valve related problem and could not find proper treatment in his home country.

The artificial valve was made out of bovine pericardium and was used for the first time in India.

Dr Nisarga, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, KIMS Hospitals, Kondapur said, "The tests revealed that he was found to have Severe Mitral Valve Regurgitation (severe leak in one of the major heart valves), along with inflammation of gallbladder with stones. As he had typical abdominal symptoms also, we worked along with our Surgical Gastroenterology team."

The heart as well as abdominal surgery was performed simultaneously.

The patient was discharged on 5th postoperative day, without any complications.
