Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday inaugurated the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) which is said to be the world's biggest in terms of capacity. KCR launched the project by a ribbon cutting ceremony at Medigadda barrage. Before it, Andhra Pradesh chief minister unveiled the plaques at Medigadda barrage with the name of governor ESL Narasimhan on the top.

Later, the chief minister along with his Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra counterparts and ESL Narasimhan took part in 'Purnahuti' at yagashala in Kannepalli. KCR then unveiled the plaques at the Kanepalli pump house and inaugurated it. Meanwhile, Minister Koppula Eshwar inaugurated the Sundilla pump house, minister Malla Reddy inaugurated the Medaram pump house and the largest Lakshmipur pump house was inaugurated by Minister Jagdish Reddy.

The three chief ministers and the governor will examine the flow of Godavari water to Annaram Barrage through the gravity canal at the distribution system.

The project will provide irrigation water to 45 lakh acres of land besides providing drinking water and water to industrial use. The government has spent Rs 50,000 crores till date while the estimated cost of the project is Rs 80,000 crore.

Kaleshwaram, the biggest engineering marvel is constructed by the Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) in just two years. MEIL created a record establishing the world's biggest pumping machines with a capacity of 139 MWs at the underground pump house and biggest surge pools.
