Khammam: Several senior leaders condoled the death of Khammam TSRTC depot driver D Srinivas Reddy who died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad on Sunday. Srinivas Reddy attempted self-immolation on Saturday while staging protests in the ongoing RTC strike.

His was body was brought to Khammam amid tight police security from Hyderabad during late evening hours. Congress leaders Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, V Hanumantha Rao, G Renuka Chowdary, BJP MP B Sanjay and leader P Sudhakar Reddy and Left leader K Sambasiva Rao extended their condolences to the bereaved family of the driver.

Vikramarka and Hanumantha Rao joined the protests by the RTC JAC here on Sunday and demanded that the State government take the responsibility of the deceased driver's family. They also appealed to the RTC staff not to resort to any extreme measures.

The JAC activists staged protests at all depots in erstwhile Khammam paying homage to their fellow worker Srinivas Reddy. During a protest in Khammam a woman identified as Kavitha suffered from exhaustion and was taken to hospital for treatment.

On the other hand, District Collector RV Karnan and Commissioner of Police Tafseer Iqbal conducted a meeting to review the security measures to maintain law and order in view of Khammam bandh called on Monday by RTC JAC and different political parties.

The Collector appealed to the public and RTC workers to maintain peace in the district. Meanwhile, following the news of death of driver Srinivas Reddy a pall of gloom descended on Raparthinagar in Khammam where his residence was located. Friends, family members and RTC staff and political parties leaders paid homage to the deceased driver.

"Srinivas Reddy comes from a family of farmers and was very dedicated to his job. His family was well settled, and he was a happy man always concerned about his fellow workers. His death was very sad," one of his friends said. According to reports, a suicide note allegedly written by the deceased driver was found in which he wanted merger of TSRTC into government.
