Malkajgiri: For the past several years, Ramchandra Reddy, 38, a resident of Malkajgiri, has been distributing nest boxes and setting up fresh water bowls for sparrows in the city.

"Initially, I did it alone but now we are a large group who take out time and set up water bowls as the water in the ponds is polluted," says Ramchandra.

To a question whether sparrows return, and drink water placed in bowls, he says, "At times it takes months, they come have a look and return the next day. Only when they feel secure they start consuming water. One needs to have a lot of patience."

Over the years, water bowls have been set up in 3,000 apartments across the city.

Ramchandra distributes a free nest box at first and once the news spreads, people request for more. He also visits schools and delivers lectures.

For the past few years, he has been roping in IAS and IPS officers.

He says, "When top officials endorse the idea, the common man readily accepts."

This year he presented a nest to GHMC additional commissioner Amrapalli and several other officials.
