Wanaparthy: Many people are falling sic due to the degraded bread in attractive packages sold at the kirana shops in Wanaparty district.

Unconcerned about the impact on public health, the bakers supply degraded and spoilt bread and other food items to consumers directly through their outlets and indirectly through the kirana shops and this is causing a grave hazard to the public health in the district.

On the other hand, the municipal and health authorities and food inspectors are turning a blind eye even as the bakers are violating the food quality norms. "The bakery owners have made it a habit of making good money by selling packed bread to the consumers through the kirana shops in Wanaparthy district. While bakers are making good profits, the end losers are the general public and the children who are falling sick by eating the rotten bread," said a consumer, while showing the spoilt milk bread he had brought from one Jahangir Bakery, near the Wanaparthy bus stand.

Usually, the bakery owners prepare bread and supply it to the kirana shops on a day-to-day basis and those bread which do not get sold should be taken back and fresh bread must be replaced.

However, the bakery owners are preparing bread with not-of-quality ingredients and they are also not packing the bread in clean and dry sachets, because of which the bread with moisture content gets spoilt in less than one days time instead of its actual shelf time of 2-3 days. Kirana shop owners should also remove the old stock of breads from their shelf soon after the expiry date is over, but because of over greed and having no regards for the public health they are selling the spoilt bread to the public and trying to earn profits putting the public health at stake.

"Usually quality bread stays for 3-4 days, but if it is not packed properly or no hygiene is maintained then the bread gets spoils very fast," said a shop owner selling the milk bread supplied by the bakery owner.

In fact, the municipal health assistants must regularly conduct checks in the bakeries and should keep an eye if they are following hygiene and quality or not. They must also check the packets weather they are printed with packed date, expiry date and weight on the packets. They should also check if the bakery has taken any permission or not and if they are using the right kind of packing material which is safe to hold the eatable items in them.

However, the municipal health authorities are turning a blind eye towards the bakeries because of which the bakeries and Kirana shop owners are selling spoilt breads and other not of quality eatables to the general public and causing health hazard.
