Riding 18,000 km to spread cancer awareness in country

Meet 24-year-old, Bengaluru-based physiotherapist and a passionate biker Dr Namrata Singh who has visited 14 states and 6 union territories in order to create awareness about cancer mainly faced by the females. She spreads awareness on breast cancer, oral cancer, cervical cancer, menstrual cup and good and bad touch.

Secunderabad: A cancelled visa to the USA for higher studies was disappointing but the Rs 8 lakh that Dr Namrata Singh had came handy to pursue her dream of riding a bike across the country.

Battling against the odds and the gender stereotypes, Dr Namrata traveled 18,200 km in order to create awareness about cancer mainly among women and girls. Namrata conducts awareness on breast cancer, oral cancer, cervical cancer, menstrual cup and good and bad touch.

Dr Namrata began this trip on September 01, 2019 from Bangalore. During the start of the trip, her friend Poonam Navle accompanied her till Delhi. She said, "I had a passion of riding and always dreamt of covering the country on my bike. Being a physiotherapist, I wanted to include a medical cause and set out on a mission."

The ongoing trip is not an easy one for sure. Refreshing about one of the incidents she said, "In Kashmir, I was accosted by some miscreants protesting against my carrying an Indian flag on the bike, by pelting stones, they tore the flag and broke the flag post on my bike. But the courage I gathered and the sheer determination got me to set out with the mission of educating women. The next day I went to the Lal Chowk area of Srinagar, with a new Indian flag and made an impressive circle in the center of the town. In the Himalayas too, I waded through heavy snow, chilled weather and difficult road to drive. Also went to the highest motorable pass, the Khardung La pass."

Another drawback for her during her awareness campaigns or sessions was that the women or the girls hesitated to open up if there was even a single male person standing near to them. The target of the trip is to cover at least 50,000 kms and reach the maximum number of people, especially females. Dr Namrata has been conducting several sessions as well on creating awareness on Cancer. She traveled from Bengaluru to Hyderabad for an event which was conducted by the American Oncology Institute, Nallagandla, on Tuesday.
