The Telangana Excise department has earned Rs 968 crore as the application fee for liquor shop licenses across the state. It has received Rs 48,000 applications for 2,216 liquor shops in the state for the applicants made Rs 2 lakh non-refundable deposit.

The rise in the number of applications is due to the changes in excise policy made by the AP government

The new liquor licenses are given by November 1 for a two-period from November 2019 to October 2021 and the draw of lots will take place today and the candidate has to pay Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore and more as license fee depending on the population in the area of the shop.

The neighbouring Andhra Pradesh has made changes in the liquor policy taking over liquor outlets and also set the timings from 11 am to 8 pm for selling liquor. The changes made in AP liquor policy has increased the applicants in Telangana.
