New food processing policy to focus on financial empowerment to farmers and jobs for youth

Hyderabad: Minister for IT and Industries K T Rama Rao has emphasised the need for a food processing policy which would ensure financial empowerment of farmers and employment opportunities for youth.

Addressing a seven-hour long meeting with Group of Ministers (GoM) held at Pragati Bhavan on Wednesday, KTR presented a draft policy which was prepared in consultation with industrial managements. The GoM examined these policies along with incentives being offered by other States as well as other countries and have come up with proposals to offer subsidies and incentives to develop the food processing industry in the State.

The Minister stated that the completion of irrigation projects will help further increase agricultural production in the State. He also stressed the need to increase food processing capacity in the State. By promoting the food processing sector extensively, farmers in the State will grow economically which will also create employment opportunities for the local youth, KTR added.

With the successful implementation of sheep and fish fingerlings distribution schemes, the Minister said that there has been a significant increase in the sheep populace and production of fish. This will help to promote Blue and Pink revolution by encouraging food processing industries in the two sectors, he said.

The Minister said that the completion of irrigation projects will help further increase agricultural production. Stressing the need to increase food processing capacity, he highlighted that the crops being cultivated in every village, mandal, and district are being mapped across the State for comprehensive information on agricultural operations.

Stating that there are abundant investment opportunities in the food processing sector as the State registered high numbers in agriculture production, KTR expressed confidence that the new policies will help bolster rural economy, attract investments and increase employment opportunities.

Officials said that the draft policy will be submitted to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for approval. Among those who attended the meeting apart from Ministers were Telangana State Planning Board vice-chairman B Vinod Kumar, Government Chief Advisor Rajiv Sharma, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, Principal Secretaries and senior officials.
