State Govt clueless over status of DPRs to be sent to Centre

Hyderabad: Telangana seems to have lost a chance to get medical colleges for unserved regions. The Union Cabinet had approved setting up of 75 government medical colleges across the country where there are no such colleges.

These medical colleges were to be established by 2021-22 and are to be attached to existing District and Referral hospitals under Phase-3 of the Centrally sponsored scheme.

Accordingly, the Centre had asked all States to send proposals with DPRs. But it looks that Telangana had fallen behind the race compared to other States.

According to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, 89 DPRs were received till February 4 from 17 States and 57 DPRs were approved from various states, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, J&K, Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Bengal and other states.

According to the minister, 32 more DPRs were under consideration and this includes Assam, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. There is no mention of Telangana in this list.

It may be mentioned here that all new government medical colleges are being established with 150 MBBS seats with an estimated project cost of nearly Rs 500 crore per college.

The Centre would be bearing 60 per cent of the total cost to set up the new institution with State contributing 40 per cent.
