Telangana,Tamil Nadu doctors treatment protocol reducing fatality rate
- Gandhi doctors using anti-viral, inflammatory drugs and steroids
- Tamil Nadu doctors extensively using Methylprednisolone
Hyderabad: Telangana has witnessed low death rate compared to States like Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, MP and West Bengal. And a big part of this is the treatment protocol adopted by doctors from Gandhi, the main Covid hospital in the State. They are using five main medicines on patients who are in critical condition and whose chances of survival are 50:50. And these medicines (including Lopinavir/Ritonavir, Remedisvir (anti-viral drugs), Interferon Beta (anti-inflammatory drug),
According to Gandhi Hospital Superintendent Dr Raja Rao, Gandhi has treated more than 600 critical patients so far. We used any of the five medicines depending on the patient's condition and their effect was clearly visible. Low death rate among critical patients in Gandhi is an indication, he felt.
Telangana recorded over 6,500 positive cases and 198 deaths which means the fatality rate is just around 3 per cent, which is comparatively less in other States. Our neighboring State-Tamil Nadu has very low death rate though the cases load is very high. Of the 54,469 positive cases reported in the State only 666 patients have died which means the fatality rate is just 1.2 per cent
Doctors in Tamil Nadu used Methylprednisolone on critically ill patients and it yielded good results. In Covid cases, pneumonia and lung issues are mostly seen and Methylprednisolone, a steroid, was used because of its action on lungs.
L Parathasarathy, Professor in Tamil Nadu Multispecialty Hospital and Madras Medical College stated that they began giving Methylprednisolone to patients at an early stage before their health condition deteriorated. And it prevented majority of patients with moderate symptoms from falling critically ill. He said that 99.9 per cent of all government and private Covid hospitals have followed this treatment protocol.
Recently, after Oxford University's trials Dexamethasone was hailed as the first life saving drug in the international media but our very own doctors have been using this particular medicine and a few others from last three months with good results.
