Warangal: Sikhs across the erstwhile Warangal district celebrated the 550th birth anniversary of the founder of their religion Guru Nanak. Greater Warangal Mayor Gunda Prakash Rao, who participated in the celebration of Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurupurab, at Pochamma Maidan here on Tuesday, said that it's one of the most important festivals for Sikhs.

"Guru Nanak shows the path that connects our inner self. There was a dire need for carrying his teachings - Work hard to earn and share it with others in the name of Lord – to inculcate unity and brotherhood among the people," Prakash Rao said.

Right through his life, Guru Nanak, who was born in a village near Lahore in Pakistan, emphasised the need for peace, equality and tolerance. Guru Nanak worked on spiritual, social and political platforms, giving impetus on principles of goodness, and virtue, the Mayor said. He is worshipped not only by the Sikh community but also the people of other religions.
