Warangal: All eyes are on who will be the next Mayor of Greater Warangal. With the D-Day fixed for electing Mayor, a good number of Corporators aspiring for the coveted post have intensified their lobbying in Hyderabad. It's been more than three months since the Mayor post was falling vacant.

It may be mentioned here that Mayor post is up for grabs since Nannapuneni Narender vacated it after he was elected as the MLA of the Warangal East constituency. Although there are quite a few contenders for the Mayor post, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leadership which was preoccupied with the elections to the Parliament played it safely by appointing the Deputy Mayor Khaja Sirajuddin as the In-charge Mayor.

With the Lok Sabha polls are over and the State Election Commission (EC) announcing the date (April 27) for the election of Mayor, all of a sudden there is a spurt of activity among the aspirants. Although the TRS leadership is tight-lipped over who will be made the first citizen of the Corporation, quite a few aspirants who pinned their hopes on Mayor post are leaving no stone unturned to catch the attention of the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and party working president K T Rama Rao.

If the Corporators are trying their best to grab the opportunity, the rumour mill is busy spreading the news that the local MLAs don't want another power centre grow in their respective constituencies. It's apparent that they want someone with low profile be made the Mayor so that their sway over district politics would be unaffected.

"This time around, the Mayor post would be given to forward castes as both the MLAs of the city belong to backward classes. The TRS leadership, which kept a close watch on the workmanship of its leaders during the Lok Sabha elections, certainly has an idea over the commitment of the Corporators.

The efforts put in by the Corporators will also be taken into the consideration," a senior TRS leader told The Hans India. Although there are quite a few in the race for the post, party sources suggest that Boinapally Ranjith Rao (48th Division), Gunda Prakash Rao (26th Division), Nagamalla Jhansi (56th Division) and Vaddiraj Ganesh (27th Division) are the frontrunners.

Meanwhile, it's learnt that in-charge Mayor Khaja Sirajuddin is also lobbying for the post. Although it's said that Ranjith Rao has the blessings of KTR, the other contenders – Jhansi, Prakash Rao and Ganesh are also trying hard with the help of their political godfathers. It's learnt that Sirajuddin seems to have taken the route of Deputy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali.
