Visakhapatnam: Diesel Loco Shed (DLS), Visakhapatnam, came with its latest invention of Ultra Violet radiation based disinfection sanitiser for currency notes, papers and tools.

To combat the spread of pandemic virus infection, DLS is ahead in several inventions, such as preparation of thousands of litres of hand sanitiser for utilisation of staff, masks, sanitising tunnel, leg operated (hands-free) hand wash booths, sensor-based hand sanitiser dispensers.

The latest invention is sanitiser for currency notes. The railways deals with transaction of currency notes at passenger reservation counters, parcels offices in addition to cashless transactions for hassle-free services. There is also huge number of paper transaction in the form of receipts, tickets, files.

As per the guidance of Divisional Railway Manager, Waltair division, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, under the monitoring of Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Diesel) Santosh Kumar Patro, the fabrication of the UVC sanitisers done at Diesel Loco Shed in Visakhapatnam with in-house sources.

This equipment works on the principle of ultra violet radiation emitted from a germicidal UVC lamp that kills up to 99.9 per cent of most the viruses.

A passenger has to place the reservation form and currency notes in the tray, the railway staff places them into the UVC light provided in the box. It will be sanitised in almost 10 seconds. This machine can also be used to sanitise the mobile phones, wallets and any other items which fits inside the tray.

East Coast Railway authorities appreciated the work of the DLS team and advised for fabrication of 150 currency sanitiser apparatuses to be provided at all the ticket counters under its jurisdiction.
