Lunch Motion petition in High Court over postponement of local body elections

The Lunch Motion petition was filed in the Andhra Pradesh High Court over the postponement of local body elections. The petition sought the immediate intervention on the issue demanding to hold local body elections as per the released schedule. The High Court will reportedly hear the petition in a while. On the other hand, Ramesh Kumar, the chief of the state election commission who met Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan explained why the elections were postponed. The governor has reportedly asked the SEC as to why the commission had not informed the state government while taking the decision.

The SEC Ramesh Kumar in reply to governor said that the elections had been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak and the violence acts taken place in Guntur and Chittoor districts ahead of nominations. The governor is likely to send a report to the Center, summarizing the government's argument and the SEC argument over the issue.

CM Jagan has expressed displeasure over the decision of the Election Commission to postpone local body elections in AP. While the Chief Secretary Neelam Sawhney has wrote to the Election Commission demanding the continuation of local body elections as per earlier schedule. In the letter, she said the state is prepared to handle local elections and assured of measures to be taken to curtail the spread of coronavirus in the state.
