Houses for 242 Kodagu flood victims ready
Kodagu: Kodagu district administration has completed the construction of 242 houses, for the victims of floods and landslides during heavy south-west monsoon rains in 2018.
Speaking to The Hans India, Kodagu DC Annies Kanmani Joy said that they would hand over the houses to the victims in January 2021.
The 556-sqft two-bed room houses have been built at Gaalibeedu and Biligeri. The Kodagu district administration and the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corportion Limited have jointly built each house at a cost of Rs 9.85 lakh. As many as 805 people lost their homes due to floods and landslides in 2018. The district administration has already provided housing to 563 victims. The officials handed over 463 houses to the victims at Field Marshal K M Kariappa layout at Jumboor and Madhe in Kodagu on June 4 this year and another 35 on October 24 last year. The government gave Rs 9.85 lakh each to 65 victims who wanted to build houses on their own.
The State government paid a rent of Rs 10,000 each to 417 families until the construction of their houses were completed.
This year due to heavy rains between August 5 and August 10 as many as 346 houses suffered damage in the district. The government promised to extend a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to 12 families whose houses suffered 75-100 percent damage.
Ms Annies said ex gratia for these victims will be given stage-wise.
