No headway in move to shift dump yard

Trimulgherry: It has been more than four years since the residents of ward 7 of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) submitted representation to shift the dump yard from the Mahatma Gandhi Community Hall (MGCH). The SCB has been silent on the matter and there is no mention of it at any of the board meetings.

Last year the Local Military Authority (LMA) along with representatives of SCB toured Suchitra, Bolarum, Kowkoor and Jawahar Nagar areas to scout for a suitable place. According to reliable sources, land near the military dairy farm was surveyed to shift the dump yard but the LMA has to take a decision.

Bhagya Shree, the SCB member of ward 7, said, "We have made several efforts to bring SCB at work and we were informed that the work is in progress. An open land near Dairy Farm Road is under consideration and if it works the dump yard will be shifted there."

Meanwhile, residents have been bearing the brunt. The place is a home to a public library, gym and a community hall which no more serve their purposes because of the illegal dumping around the lung space. The pungent smell drives away people and even kids who once played in this ground.

"Even after reported complaints there has been no action taken. We have stopped coming out of our houses because of the extremely unpleasant stench. The play ground has now become a breeding ground for mosquitos and insects" says Sai Prasad a local from neighboring colony.

Apparently, no permission was granted by the SCB for the dumping of waste in this area. "The SCB says that they're in search of other dumping lands but there are no available areas away from residential places. If nothing can be done they will shift the hall and amenities to some other place for the public" said Shiva Venkatesh, a local.
