TSWB chairman holds meeting with Qazis

Nampally: Telangana State Wakf Board Chairman Md Saleem on Tuesday held a meeting with Chief Qazis from across the State and discussed the modalities of endorsing Talaq or Khula (divorce proceedings initiated by woman) in the light of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.

It may be mentioned here that ever since the Act saw the light of the day, after the Indian Parliament criminalised Triple Talaq, there has been confusion amongst the State's Wakf Board authorities on issuing of certificates related to divorce.

This month, TS Wakf Board also drew flak following a decision to stop issuing certificates of 'Talaq & Khula' following the development at the national level. It was reported that Board's chairman himself had directed, CEO of Wakf Board, Abdul Hameed and other officials to refrain from issuing certificates.

On Tuesday, to resolve the matters, the Chairman discussed with the Qazis about the issue, given the sensitivity of the matter. The Wakf Board also noted the recommendations and impediments in implementation of the new norms. The Qazis were told to first counsel the couple in the light of Islamic teachings, if they approach them and not hasten the process, which cannot be reversed by them.

Later speaking to media persons, Saleem said that an elaborate meeting will be organized by inviting Qazis from across the State, where deliberations will be made by inviting Islamic scholars from different schools of thought, besides higher officials from representing the community, so that they reach a consensus in implementation of marriage related practices particularly in the light of latest developments at the national level.
