Cyclone Nisarga Makes Landfall In Raigad

Cyclone Nisarga has made landfall at Murud near Raigad, according to media reports.

The maximum city of Mumbai now faces the impact of the biggest storm ever to come its way in recorded history. Mumbai is already reeling from the onslaught of coronavirus pandemic which has stretched the city's civic and healthcare infrastructure.

Cyclone Nisarga comes on the back of rising numbers from the pandemic. However, authorities are bracing themselves for the impact of the storm and have advised Mumbaikars to stay indoors.

Mumbai civic authorities have also evacuated more than 10,000 people in the metropolis and police have ensured that people stay off the roads to a very large extent. Police are monitoring vulnerable areas with dozens of lifeguards deployed at 6 beaches in the city for any emergency.

People have been kept of beaches and have been advised not to venture out. Fishermen have also been told not to venture out into the sea. The authorities have put out a number of do's and don'ts for the citizens of Mumbai. They have asked them to be prepared for snapping of power lines and water supply cuts for six hours or more in view of cyclone Nisarga.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) control room has been keeping a close eye on the situation in the city. 20 national disaster response force NDRF teams have been deployed in Mumbai.

The Indian Coast Guard has also mobilised teams in preparedness for cyclone Nisarga.

Several low-lying areas in Mumbai face the threat of inundation. The BMC authorities shifted COVID-19 patients from temporary facilities to permanent ones.

Maharashtra is the worst-affected state in the country from the coronavirus pandemic with more than 72,300 cases. Mumbai, as it turns out, is the epicentre of the pandemic in the state.
