Delhi Results: Alka Lamba Trails In Chandni Chowk
New Delhi: With counting for the 70-member Delhi Assembly expected to be over in a few hours from now on Tuesday, one of the seats which has been marked as a high-profile contest is the Chandni Chowk constituency. The contest is mainly between Prahlad Sahni of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Suman Kumar Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the charismatic Alka Lamba of the Congress.
Alka Lamba is the incumbent MLA from Chandni Chowk who left AAP following differences with the party leadership. Lamba was expected to give a tough fight to the AAP candidate. On voting day, Alka Lamba tried to slap a worker from AAP alleging that he had used foul language against her.
The AAP counted mainly on its development work especially in areas like health care and education. AAP also highlighted its free electricity and water supply among its principal achievements.
Chandni Chowk has a fairly large Muslim population which is expected to swing the result against the BJP. Alka Lamba is seen as a victim of collateral damage in this equation because the minority population does not want a split of its voter base, as analysts see it.
Two hours after counting had started and after about two of the twelve rounds got over, the AAP is seen leading in 51 constituencies and the BJP in 19. The Congress is still to open its tally in leads.
