On Thursday five accused were detained, for arson and vandalism at Nallur toll plaza on Wednesday. The search is ongoing for those who stole cash from the plaza counters during the clash. Police plan to scan through the neighboring villages to narrow down the suspects.

For more than an hour chaos prevailed at the Nallur toll plaza in Thiruvallur getting the traffic to a full stop along the Chennai-Kolkata highway. Police arrested five people from both sides who were later remanded in Puzhal prison and registered two separate cases.

In the meantime, the toll plaza manager filed an additional complaint demanding legal action against the suspects who stole cash from the collection booths at Sholavaram police station. CCTV camera footage of some people attacking and destroying the computers at the toll booth and stealing cash from the counters was also submitted by the officials.

The toll plaza is maintained by a private concessionaire, which was established in 2009 by the NHAI. The monthly pass cost Rs. 150 and Rs. 300 for local traffic within 10km and 10-20km radius from the plaza, until last financial year. But the toll rates were revised on April 1. The increase in rate of monthly passes caused the protests by local truck and van drivers during the second week of April.
