Supreme Court To Hear BJP Plea On MP Floor Test Today

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a petition on Tuesday, filed by former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and nine other MLAs seeking directions to the Kamal Nath government to go through a floor test, stating that the Congress government had been reduced to a minority. The legal battle will mark the final chapter in the ongoing political drama in Madhya Pradesh.

The MP Governor Lalji Tandon, had on Monday, written a second letter to Chief Minister Kamal Nath directing him to prove his majority in a trust vote. Lalji Tandon had on Sunday, written to Kamal Nath asking him to seek a trust vote after his gubernatorial address. However, after the Governor finished his brief address to the legislature, the Speaker of the assembly, NP Prajapati adjourned the House till March 26 citing the novel coronavirus outbreak across the country, amidst protests by the BJP.

A delegation of BJP MLAs led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan shortly after the adjournment of the assembly. The former Madhya Pradesh chief Minister requested the government to put the Kamal Nath regime through a floor test claiming that the Congress government was in a minority.

Kamal Nath however, claimed that there was no need for him to seek a trust vote. He told the media on Monday that if anyone had doubts about his government's majority, they could move a motion of "No Confidence."

Meanwhile, the rebel Congress MLAs loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia, are scheduled to address a press conference at 9.30 am on Tuesday.
