Rajamahendravaram: The Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation (RMC) has cracked the whip on tax evaders in the city by disconnecting drinking water connections. The RMC took the action as there was no response from the tax payers instead of repeated reminders from the corporation to clear taxes.

On the directions of Commissioner V Vijayarama Raju, special teams pressed into service and disconnected drinking water tap connections of tax evaders in Burma Colony and Vidyut Colony in 9th division on Wednesday. As a result of the action, an amount of Rs 2.78 lakh was collected towards property tax and Rs 52,440 towards water tax in Burma Colony alone.

In 50th division, an amount of Rs 73 lakh towards property tax, Rs 47,000 towards vacant land tax and Rs 3.57 lakh towards water tax was collected on Wednesday. Commissioner V Vijayarama Raju has said all emergency services would be stopped to tax evaders and many were not responding to pay property tax, water tax etc instead of repeated reminders.

“It is the duty of the tax payers to pay taxes to the corporation as per schedule,” he reminded. The special teams would continue checking regularly and initiate action, he added.
