Research in genetics has huge impact on mankind
Kadapa: New horizons are evolving in the field of genetics research that has huge impact on the mankind but there is an urgent need to adhere to the strict moral and ethical values stressed Prof Attipalli Ramachandra Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Yogi Vemana University (YVU).
Participating as chief guest and addressing the inaugural session of the two-day workshop on “New horizons in genetics” he affirmed that concepts like genetic engineering, genetic medicine, genome mapping, designer babies and cloning has hugely impacted the mankind especially in the early detection and prevention of some of the genetically inherited diseases.
Explaining the theme of the workshop, Coordinator Dr N Venkata Rami Reddy informed that genetics is fast growing field involving various advancements in theory and practice. Two out of three people will be affected by gene variations in their lives as every individual has his own unique genetic makeup, he added.
He thanked the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru; Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, and the National Academy of Sciences India, Allahabad who are jointly sponsoring the workshop. The workshop is attended by more than 150 teachers, researchers and students from all over the state.
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Prof H A Ranganath is acting as convener of the workshop in which Prof N B Ramachandra from Department of Genetics and Genomics, University of Mysore; Prof N Nagesh and Prof Upendra of IISc will deliver special lectures on various developments in the fields of genetic research and development. YVU Registrar Prof K Chandraiah, YVU College Principal Prof K Satyanarayuana Reddy, students and staff of the Department of Zoology attended the programme.
