Vizianagaram: Dog menace was haunting the people of the district for the past few months. Already, dog bites claimed the lives of two persons recently and 10 more were injured. The stray dogs are chasing the people and biting them.

Population of stray dogs is on the rise as the government officials, including municipal administration, is not taking strict measures to minimise it. Even the sterilisation process also is not being done properly. Vizianagaram municipal authorities deployed some of its employees to sterilise the dogs in September 2017, but the process was not completed and now again the population of the stray dogs has been increasing.

Recently, a 10-year-old boy R Jaswanth died of dog bite at Ampavilli village in Balijpeta mandal last week and P Bhagya Lakshmi also died of stray dog bite in Salur town in December 2017.

Apart from that one boy was admitted to Parvathipuram area hospital with rabies and recently some stray dogs attacked 12 persons at KR Peta and PSR Puram villages in Gajapathi Nagaram. Even the children are fearing to venture out of their homes to play in streets. P Ramakrishna, Chairman of Vizianagaram Municipality, said that they would take measures to curb the dogs’ population.
