Cricket-betting gang arrested

Kurnool: The I town cops arrested 6 persons for organising cricket-betting and recovered Rs 6.1 lakh cash, five mobiles and 3 passports from them. All the accused were brought before the media in the presence of District Superintendent of Police (SP) Gopinath Jetty at Ved Vyas Auditorium here on Wednesday.

Addressing the media, the SP said the cops, on a credible information, have raided a house near Manubasha Darga in I-town locality and took six persons into the custody. The SP stated that they were accused in another cricket-betting case. He said that police identified involvement of 22 persons in the cricket-betting racket.

Nine were arrested on April 23 th and 24th and another 13 were on the run. The accused, who were arrested today were part of the gang, who were at large since then. The accused were identified as Shaik Mohammed Shoaib, Khaleel Majeed Khan, Shaik Mohammed Asif, Shaik Mohammed Shabbir, Khaleel Sharjil Khan and S Maqbul Ahmed.

Gopinath Jetty stated that man hunt is underway to nab the remaining 7 more accused. A case was registered, and cops would produce them in the court for further action. The SP further said rowdy sheet was opened against the six accused and invoked PD Act. The SP also said that rumours are spreading fast that Pardhi gang members had entered the district.

He declared no such gang has entered the district and made an appeal to people not to get panic with false rumours. He requested the residents to inform the police about suspicious persons loitering in and around their surroundings. DSP Shaik Khader Basha, Circle Inspector Muralidhar Reddy, Sub Inspector Praveen Kumar Reddy and other officials were present.
