Cops unique gesture toward beggars, mentally-challenged
Rajamahendravaram: Urban Police took up a unique programme to protect beggars and mentally retarded persons from the people who are attacking them mistaking them as kidnappers and members of some gangs.
As part of it, urban Superintendent of Police B Raja Kumari organised shaving and hair cutting programme to 300 beggars and mentally retarded persons at Pushkar Ghat on Thursday night. Later, after they took bath under the taps, she distributed clothes to them.
Under the aegis of Central Zone Deputy Superintendent of Police J Kula Sekhar, the beggars from Kotipalli Bus Station, Subramanya Mydanam and Kambala tank were shifted to Pushkar Ghat with the assistance of inspectors Maruthi Rao and M Ravindra.
Later, she said the people are getting panic after witnessing videos in social media anticipating fear from psychos, kidnappers, cheddi gangs etc. People are attacking the beggars and mentally retarded because of their dress and behaviour.
The programme was executed to change their dress and appearance. She appealed to the people not to believe the news coming in social media in the names of various gangs and kidnappers. She advised the people to inform to the police to the phone numbers 100 and 1091 if they found any person moving in suspicious manner.
