Anantapur: AP SC/ST Commission Chairman Dr Karem Sivaji has regretted that social discrimination of SC and STs still existed in rural areas. The increasing atrocities in the society were an indication of the social bias towards them, he pointed out.

Talking to reporters after receiving petitions from the SC/ST bodies here on Sunday, Sivaji called for quick action on the culprits in the atrocity cases especially their arrest as that would send a right message to the accused. He said the state government was spending a whopping Rs 1,400 crore on SC welfare and Rs 3,000 crore on STs welfare in the state.

He welcomed the implementation of rule of reservation in private educational institutions and hoped it would create a level playing field to the under-privileged children. He called upon the officials of various departments to fill up all vacancies of SC/STs by March 31. Earlier collector Veera Pandian and SP G V G Ashok Kumar called on Karem Sivaji at the Roads and Buildings guest house.
