Senior citizens honoured on International Elders Day in Vijayawada
Vijayawada: Water Resource Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said that the government was introducing various welfare and development programmes for the uplift of the poor, disadvantaged and weaker sections of society.
The minister participated as chief guest at International Elders Day celebrations organised at Indian Medical Association Hall here on Friday.
He said that the Chief Minister would soon complete 70 years and still actively striving for the development of the state and for the senior citizens.
He said that the government had established Anna canteens for the poor and the elderly people to have food at an affordable price.
The minister distributed wheelchairs, walking sticks and hearing machines to the elder on the occasion.
About 15 elders were honoured by the minister for their service to society.
Senior citizens association secretary M Venkateswara Rao demanded that the government establish a corporation for senior citizens, physically handicapped and transgenders.
The association president, V Babu Rao and others members were present on the occasion.
