Pregnant woman ends life over dowry harassment

Kurnool: A pregnant woman committed suicide by hanging in her house in Jalimanchi village under Peddatumbalam police station limits on Thursday. According to Peddatumbalam Sub-Inspector Ramesh Babu, the deceased who has been identified as Santhamma (20) was married to one Govindarajulu of Jalimanchi village three years ago.

The couple have 18-month-old son while she was four months pregnant. Govindarajulu, who is addicted to vices, had been harassing Santhamma for additional dowry from her parents. Unable to bear the torture by Govindrajulu, Santhamma resorted to the extreme step when no one was at home on Thursday.  When the other family members reached home, they saw Santhamma hanging from the ceiling and called the police.

“On receiving the information, we reached the spot and brought down the body and sent it for post mortem at Adoni hospital,” Said SI Ramesh Babu. The police registered a case on the basis of the complaint lodged by Santamma’s parents Kamakshamma and Ayyappa ant took up investigation.
