Story:
Set in 1980's, a journalist Madhura Vani (Samantha) and a photographer Vijay Anthony (Vijay Devarakonda) are assigned to cover a story on Mahanati Savitri. They start collecting information on Savitri from different sources. The life of Savitri is depicted on the screen from her birth to the tragic death.
Performances:
The performances from the four lead actors are exceptional. Keerthy Suresh as Mahanati Savitri is perfect. No one has ever imagined that Keerthy Suresh will be a perfect match for the legendary actress and the young heroine has delivered her best to match the Mahanati. Keerthy delivered an award-winning performance in the movie and this will be remembered for decades. Dulquer Salmaan as Gemini Ganesan is impressive.
His role is full of life. Dulquer played the crucial role very well and proved his mettle. Samantha and Vijay Devarakonda are active, energetic and brilliant in the roles of Madhuravani and Vijay Anthony. Samantha's performance in the climax deserves special mention. The special cameos of Krish, Prakash Raj, Mohan Babu, Naga Chaitanya, Malavika Nair, Shalini Pandey, Srinivas Avasarala, Rajendra Prasad and others are good.
Technical Aspects:
The camera work by Dani S is impressive. His way of handling the movie with the lens is good. The authentic look created by the DOP is generating a good response. The editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao is good and neat. The music composed by Mickey J Meyer is arresting. All the songs from the audio album have come out well. The background score by Mickey is too good too. The production design in the movie is one of the best works in the recent times. The styling for the actors is on point. The writing is neat and the production values of the movie are lavish.
Verdict:
On a whole, Mahanati is one of the must-watch films. Keerthy Suresh completely steals the show as Savitri and it would be an understatement if we call, Savitri herself took birth as Keerthy. She completely lived in that character. The director has succeeded in re-renditioning the iconic scenes from Savitri garu’s hit films and will definitely give retro feels to the audience of that generation.
The first half is good and in the second half, the narration seems slow down but emotions work out. From beginning to end, the director made us connect with each and every character in the film. With a huge star cast and terrific performance, Mahanati is a true tribute to great actress Savitri Garu.
