Cardiac anesthesiologists play a vital role in the fast and safe recovery of the patients after cardiac surgery. Patients coming for cardiac surgeries now have more co morbidities which need special attention by the cardiac anesthesiologists while the surgeon is operating and in the ICU care. In spite of these challenges now cardiac surgeries are carried out with better outcomes.
To hasten recovery anesthesiologist are able to provide a better pain free environment. This has resulted in patients requiring shorter ventilator support and shorter ICU stay. They can be back after a cardiac surgery in the company of their loved ones within a day or so.
The advancement in cardiac anesthesia has also given life to many tiny tots relieving their symptoms of breathing difficulty, inability to play and bluish discoloration.
Cardiac surgery now is not only for term babies even preterm babies might need surgical or catheter intervention .The care of these fragile babies during the surgery is particularly challenging to the cardiac anesthesiologists. At the other end of the spectrum we also have more elderly patients requiring cardiac surgery and there has been many advancements in the management of this patient group.
Unlike in the past cardiac surgery can be carried out by selecting patient group without transfusing any blood or blood products. This vital saving of blood further helps in saving some other lives.
Cardiac anesthesiologists are also in the forefront of prolonging lives of critically ill patients with poor heart function by providing ECMO care and ventricular assist devices which are machines which do the function of heart.
