Mogudampalli:  A group of Dalits on Tuesday staged dharna in front of the Tahsildar’s office demanding possession of the house sites granted to them by the then government in 1973.

The then government allotted five acres for the homeless Dalits in 1973 under the survey number 116/2. It merely gave them pattas but the dalits were not given possession of the allotted land.

As a mark of protest the dlaits have raised huts in the allotted land living there for the past fortnight. In this background, some miscreants torched their huts on Monday night incensing them.

The irate hut dwellers staged dharna in front of the MRO office seeking possession of the land. Earlier, a delegation led by BLF leader B Ramchander submitted memoranda to district collector, RDO and Tahsildar for allotment of house-sites.

He demanded the vested interests who have set fire to the Dalits’ huts should be immediately arrested. Later, Dalit group leaders and Chiragapalli SI held discussions with tahsildar, who assured the dalits to purchase land and allot house sites after three months.

The dalits urged the tahsildar to show land at an alternative place, but the tahsildar put her foot down. Therefore, the leaders refused to discuss the issue any further. Various political outfits supported the cause of the dalits.
