Jurala Project swells as heavy rains bring good inflows

Gadwal: With upper catchment areas of Dharur mandal in Gadwal and regions of Raichur district in Karnataka receiving heavy rains this season, the Priyadarshini Jurala Project in Jogulamba Gadwal district has been receiving good inflows into the project during the past few days. 

As per the information provided by the project authorities of Jurala, every day the Jurala Project is receiving an inflow of 2,915 cusecs of water. 
The Jurala Project is the first major project on Krishna River in Telangana State which receives inflows from the Alamatti dam in Karnataka State. 

Other catchment areas both in Karnataka and in Telangana also contribute a major chunk of water share to Jurala, apart from inflows from Alamatti. Tough at present there is no outflow from Alamatti, the Jurala Project is getting inflows from the surrounding catchment areas in Telangana and Karnataka. “Earlier last year, the inflows in Jurala Project started late.

However, this year as the monsoon has begun on time, we are expecting a very good water year for Krishna River and the people of Telangana. At present, we are receiving initial inflows of 2,915 cusecs and are expecting more in the coming days as the intensity of rains may go up in the catchment areas,” said Khagender, Project Engineer of Jurala Project. 

The total capacity of Jurala Project is 11.94 TMC ft, however, due to heavy silt deposits, the project’s capacity has reduced to 9.65 TMC ft. The project officials said at present water level in Jurala Project was at 315.450 meters with a capacity 4.412 TMC ft as against its full water level capacity of 318.516 meters. 

The officials said they were expecting that if the rains were good in June and if the project reached its full level, they might release water to the left and right canals for irrigation purpose to the farmers. At present, all the gates of Jurala are closed and there is no water flow downstream.
